Our training procedure
You do not require any previous experience in strength training to attend MedStrength. Our experienced exercise instructors provide the theory and practical instruction you require to strength train safely and effectively. Age is no barrier, provided you are over 1.5 metres tall.
First training session
Your first training session will be fully supervised by one of our experienced exercise instructors. You will be shown around the training facility and you will begin your introductory training programme. You will be introduced to the MedStrength training principles and strength training machines.
Second to fifth training sessions
Members continue with supervised sessions in accordance with MedStrength training principles and methodology, during which you will learn how to set up the machines, exercise correctly and safely and advance your weights appropriately, following the scientific training principles. You will gradually learn to use the remaining machines as your programme is expanded.
Sixth to tenth sessions
Members begin to train independently. MedStrength instructors are always present on the training floor to observe that correct training procedures are being adhered to and to provide assistance as required. This provides a safer exercising environment and helps you reach your goals quicker.
For those members with complex medical or musculoskeletal conditions, supervised strength training will continue for as long as required.
Members train independently. Instructors are available at all times to assist in adjusting weights and technique to suit your needs and of course to ensure your safety.
The U.S. inventor and entrepreneur Arthur Jones developed the Nautilus range of exercise machines in the 1970s. These machines incorporated the theory of isolating and strengthening muscles without recruiting nearby and weaker muscles. The Nautilus Company became a market leader in the fitness industry. Jones sold Nautilus and founded MedX in 1986. Jones’s aim was to perfect the testing of human strength, endurance and range of movement.
After years of testing, validated by research teams at the University of Florida, MedX perfected the medical Lumbar Extension Machine which isolated, tested and trained the lower back extensor muscles.
Jones spent years researching low back pain and the benefits of strength training for the lumbar spine. In addition to medical back machine, Jones developed a range of machines to exercise muscles of the rest of the body.
MedX variable-resistance machines are the most technologically advanced fitness, sports and medical/rehabilitation equipment available. These machines operate at a very low level of friction, provide accurate and even resistance throughout the full range of movement – full flexion to full extension, or if necessary, full range of pain-free movement and specifically and safely isolate the targeted muscle group.
There are five main benefits of training with MedX machines, rather than with free weights or doing exercises using your own body weight.
The machine guides two dimensional movements. The machine dictates the course of movement. Incorrect movement is almost impossible, reducing injury risk.
Pads, supports and restraints, which form part of the machine, ensure that individual muscles are isolated.
Machine training does not require co-ordination skills. Training is effective from day one.
The gain with machine-based strength training is muscle mass, endurance and strength.
